Johnston broke away from runner-up Tasman Nankervis before the halfway point of the 106km course, finishing with a 3 minute, 10 second lead. Nankervis finished second, while Scott Bowden completed the podium. Reigning national champion Mark O'Brien finished fourth, and Sam Fox rounded out the top five. Johnston's average speed for the event was 31.1 km/h.
